Collaborative Partnerships

Protecting the Jilkaat (Chilkat) Kwaan lands and waterways for future generations is something we cannot do alone. We are a small village government with limited capacities and access to information and decision makers. We appreciate the partners who have supported the Jilkaat Kwaan in the past and currently. We welcome the support of others as we work to ensure our way of life here in the Chilkat Valley, now and for future generations.

Chilkat Valley Working Group

  • Goal: Maintain and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Chilkat Valley for future generations.

  • Guiding Principles: Working group participants acknowledge that industrial scale mining has negative impacts to natural and cultural resources. Working group participants work together to minimize negative impacts from industrial mining.

Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Network

  • SEITC is a consortium of 15 sovereign Tribal nations located in Southeast Alaska.  SEITC seeks to protect the vital and sacred rivers that sustain our communities and culture. SEITC derives its authority from Tribal governments.

  • December 2018, SEITC filed a petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to take action against Canada regarding violations by six mines in British Columbia, Canada. The petition requests the IACHR assist the tribes in obtaining relief resulting from the violations by the Canadian mines. The petition states the government of Canada did not consult with or seek the free, prior and informed consent of the tribal nations during the approval of the mines or permitting of the mines, as required by international law under the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man.
